IRS & California Tax Notice Checklist

Do not ignore a tax notice. Gather the complete record before responding.

Checklist

  • Every page of the notice or letter
  • Envelope or date received if timing matters
  • Tax year and tax type involved
  • Copy of the originally filed return
  • Amended returns, if any
  • Payment confirmations and canceled checks
  • Prior correspondence with the agency
  • W-2, 1099, K-1 or other forms relevant to the issue
  • Supporting accounting or deduction records
  • Power of attorney or authorization documents, if already executed
  • Any stated response or petition deadline
Important: Representation rights and available services depend on the tax matter, agency, filing year, preparer credentials, and applicable federal or California rules. Submission of documents does not create a representative relationship.
